Anna Pigeon stumbles into a nest of secrets - can she find her way out?

Park Ranger Anna Pigeon returns to face her most duplicitous foe, human nature, in Nevada Barr's thrilling mystery Hunting Season. Perfect for fans of Jo Nesbo and Janet Evanovich.

'Suspenseful, atmospheric [and] pulse-pounding... Hunting Season ranks right up there with the best in this excellent series' - Chicago Tribune

When Anna answers a call to historic Mt. Locust, once a producing plantation and inn on Mississippi's Natchez Trace Parkway and now a tourist spot, the last thing she expects to encounter is murder. But the man Anna finds in the stand's old bedroom is no tourist in distress. He's nearly naked, and very dead, his body bearing marks consistent with an S&M ritual gone awry. On a writing table nearby is an open Bible, ominous passages circled in red. It seems the deceased is the brother of Raymond Barnette, local undertaker and a candidate for sheriff, who wants to keep any hint of kinkiness out of the minds of the God-fearing populace.

Ray may be hiding a house full of secrets in the old family homestead, but before Anna can start her investigation, she's waylaid by malevolent poachers, peevish co-workers, and a suddenly turbulent romantic life. And when hidden agendas and old allegiances are revealed, it's suddenly Anna's life that's on the line.

Hunting Season Anna Pigeon Mysteries Book 10 A suspenseful mystery of secrets and intrigue edition by Nevada Barr Literature Fiction eBooks

NO SPOILER HERE! I will not give you a “Reader’s Digest” condensed version of this book.
Nevada Barr’s Anna Pigeon series is an exceptional creation. It is unique in that each one of the books is set in a different National Park, though there are some doubles. Ms. Barr’s descriptions of the park, the inner workings of the National Park System, history, environment, flora, fauna and applicable issues make reading these mysteries a fulfilling adventure. Like many such series, it will serve the reader well to read them in order. This isn’t necessary as each mystery will stand alone quite well. But Anna’s personal story is the thread that makes the series complete. Anna herself is a masterful creation. Human, flawed, introspective, complex, she is the window through which the reader sees much of the beauty our National Park System has to offer. From Mesa Verde, the Florida Keys, Lake Superior to environments that are dry, wet, cold, and hot, the drastically changing settings and Anna’s evolving personal life keep this series fresh and engaging. It will be no surprise to the reader that Ms. Barr is a former Park Ranger. I’ll admit I haven’t read the last three books in the series – with good reason. They are my emergency kit. When I have waded through a piece of substandard literary junk and need a dose of quality writing, an Anna Pigeon mystery is a perfect fix.

great series
Love me some Nevada Barr. Love me some Anna Pigeon. Each installment brings some welcomed education regarding one of our National Parks and the nature they protect. Ms Barr's Ms Pigeon is as unique a character in American crime fiction as one can hope to encounter.
This story did not measure up to previous Nevada Barr books I've read. The setting was part of it, not as dramatic as most of her books, but the story line was also weak. Color lines had something to do with it but also the plot line was rather vague and wispy washy. Color is not apparent while reading and neither are attitudes of participants, unless specifically outlined. Never having lived in the south, my understanding of beliefs and prejudices are not clear to me. Not a novel that fulfilled expectations derived from previous Anna Pigeon novels.
Nevada Barr never fails to provide the reader with great descriptive scenes of the Natioal Park setting of her books. The plot is fairly predicatable with Ranger Anna Pigeon always being at the center of any murder investigation. The central character is one reason I gravitate toward Barr's books. Fast-paced, lively, descriptive, and entertaining is the hallmark of a great writer.
Love the character. excellent story, I limit how many of the series I read in a quarter so I don't binge thru them all.
I run a little hot and cold with Nevada Barr's books, usually based on the location of the mystery. Her device is to set mysteries in and around the national park system and I find myself especially drawn to her books when they're about places I've been (duh!). I've never been to the Natchez Trace Parkway, and although it sounds lovely, I don't have much interest. That makes it hard to review this book objectively because the Parkway is a main character. But the book is quite good. Anna Pigeon, our now-familiar park ranger is extremely likeable and, as a woman and something of a rebel, she encounters some very ordinary problems in her workplace. And she encounters some very unusual murders outside her workplace. The story moves along nicely and there is a real intensity to the relationships in this book - and I don't just mean death and romance. This is a neck of the woods where not everyone has bought into the Civil Rights movement or equality for women. And the nice thing about it is that Nevada Barr portrays these redneck jerks without an ounce of condescension. They are what they are. And some of them get "educated". And some of them get away with it. And therein lies a pretty good book.
Hunting Season is a trip back to the Natchez Trace in Mississippi. I enjoyed Barr's Deep South and it was nice to return to this interesting section of the country. Anna Pigeon is again forced to deal with the established "ol' boy's network" while she tries to solve the murder of Doyce Barnette, the brother of the local mortician. Some of the characters in Deep South are revisited...Randy Thigpen, Barth Dinkins and Anna's love interest, Sheriff Paul Davidson. It is a little frustrating to see Anna waffle around in her prickly self when it comes to Paul...afraid of being too needy. I want to grab Anna's hand and make her reach out and grab Paul before he can get away. That is just one example of how real to life Barr has managed to make these characters. There are some of Barr's trademark descriptions of the surrounding landscape; maybe not as much as in her previous books, but what is included is quality. She uses descriptions of smells (pine, moldy leaves, etc.) more than any author I can think of, and it sounds a little odd, I know, but that, more than anything else, brings me instantly into each scene. I enjoy NB's sense of humor and it is sprinkled sparingly throughout this story, but I long for more. It's difficult to avoid comparing one book to another in a series such as this. I admit I have done so on occasion. But I think this book stands on it's own and can and will be enjoyed by readers who are new to this author. However, for those readers who haven't read Nevada Barr's previous books, you are in for a real treat.
